Bulgaria

A hidden gem of Europe

Discover the mountains, monasteries and rest in Bulgaria

Most people know Bulgaria mainly from Sunny Beach: sun, sea and partying. But what do we actually know about the rest of the country? Not much, because this part is still surprisingly undiscovered. That made us curious. In 2022 Sander decided to discover it for himself. And frankly, he was surprised by how beautiful it is. Green mountains, old monasteries, quiet villages and extensive nature parks…

Now, a few years later, we are traveling through the Balkans with our self-built campervan. During this trip we once again drove through the Bulgarian countryside, which only confirmed our first impression: Bulgaria has so much more to offer than its famous beach resorts.

Information about Bulgaria

Most people know Bulgaria from Sunny Beach, but the countryside often remains under the radar. Green mountains, monasteries, peace and tradition: we even like it better than the coast. From Sofia you drive through the country for a number of weeks. Beach, history and nature come together here in an unexpectedly beautiful way.

FAQ about Bulgaria

Yes, Bulgaria is generally safe for tourists. In large cities you have to pay close attention to your belongings, just like everywhere, but we felt at ease everywhere, even in small villages and in nature.
Many travellers can visit Bulgaria without a visa for short stays, usually up to 90 days within a 180-day period, depending on their nationality. Travellers generally only need a valid passport that remains valid for the duration of their stay. Because visa rules differ by country and may change, it’s always best to check the latest entry requirements before travelling.
The best way is with a car, either a rental or your own camper(van). This makes it easy to reach the countryside, the mountains and small villages. The roads are easy to do, although they can sometimes be a bit bumpy in remote areas.
No, Bulgaria is one of the cheaper countries in Europe. Eating, staying overnight and driving are all affordable. For a few euros you already eat a good meal in a local restaurant.
In the big cities you can pin with your regular bank card. But in the countryside and in small villages you almost always need cash (euros). So make sure you always have enough cash with you.
