Turkmenistan

Marble towns and mysterious deserts

An unforgettable experience in Central Asia

Turkmenistan was without doubt one of the most special countries we visited during our tour of Central Asia with our own campervan. Where other countries in the region are relatively accessible, Turkmenistan feels like a world in itself. It is a closed country, strictly regulated and difficult for many travelers to travel. That is precisely what made it such a unique addition to our journey for us.

In our blogs we share our experiences traveling through Turkmenistan with a camper(van), including the sometimes complicated (and not cheap) process of arranging a visa and mandatory guide. It takes some preparation and perseverance, but it is worth it without a doubt. Turkmenistan is a country you don’t just visit, and an experience you won’t forget!

Information about Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is known for its surreal contrasts: from the bright white marble city of Ashgabat to the vast Karakum desert. Along ancient caravan routes you will find remnants of the Silk Road, remote mosques and historic ruins, while modern cities are tightly directed and almost sterile.

Free travel is not possible here, but the guidance by a local guide gives a special insight into a country that normally remains closed to the outside world. Turkmenistan is not an easy destination, but it is a unique and intense travel experience.

FAQ about Turkmenistan

Yes, but it is not an easy destination. You need a visa and mandatory guide. The country is strictly regulated, but if everything is well organised, travelling is very safe.
Yes. Turkmenistan always requires a visa in advance, apply for it at least 2 months in advance. This is linked to a fixed travel program with a recognised local guide or tour operator. Arranging this takes time and money.
Yes, that is possible, but only with a guide. You travel with your own vehicle according to a predetermined route. Driving without the guide or spontaneous deviation from the program is not allowed.
The roads are variable. The roads around Ashgabat are excellent and wide. Outside the cities, roads can be worse, with holes, sand and little maintenance. The road from Turkmenabat to Mary is downright awful, just as bad (or worse) than the Pamir Highway. A 4×4 is necessary to visit the Gates to Hell.
The internet is limited and heavily censored. Many websites and apps do not work. Be prepared to be offline a lot, unless you have a Starlink.
