Where mountains, lakes and nomadic life come together
From high mountain peaks to deep lakes
Kyrgyzstan is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination. During our trip through Central Asia, we drove here with our own campervan. For Tessa, this was even her favourite country of all the “Stans” we visited. Kyrgyzstan has a lot to offer in the field of nature and culture, and we like to share those experiences in our blogs. This way you can prepare your trip to this beautiful country.
Information about Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan is known for its impressive mountain landscapes, nomadic culture and untouched nature. Much of the country is made up of high mountains, so travel here often feels like driving through an open-air museum of valleys, mountain lakes and green meadows. In the summer nomads go into the mountains with their animals and you see yurts everywhere. This gives Kyrgyzstan its own character. It is a country where nature and traditions are still a big part of everyday life.

FAQ about Kyrgyzstan
Do I need a visa to travel Kyrgyzstan?
No, many travellers can visit Kyrgyzstan without a visa for short stays, often up to 60 days depending on their nationality. If you plan to stay longer, you may need to apply for a visa or leave the country and re-enter. Because entry rules vary by nationality and may change, it is always a good idea to check the latest requirements before traveling.
Do I need a temporary import or CDP?
No, for Kyrgyzstan you don’t need a carnet de passage (CDP). You simply enter the country with your car papers. You can easily buy insurance for your vehicle after you have crossed the border.
What are the road conditions in Kyrgyzstan?
The main roads are usually easy to drive and paved, but mountain passes and smaller routes can be narrow and steep. Pay close attention to traffic in the mountains and take off-road pieces into account. Maps.me and Google Maps are handy for off-road navigation.
Is it safe to travel through Kyrgyzstan?
Yes, Kyrgyzstan is very safe. Even in remote areas you feel safe and peaceful. Prepare well for hikes and off-grid adventures, and keep in mind that authorities speak little English.
Do I need a 4x4 for Kyrgyzstan?
No, a 4×4 is not necessary for most routes. Note mountain passes and off-road pieces: a camper or bus can react differently here. Extra ground clearance and good tires are useful, but not a requirement.
